The Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary (St. Mary’s) Ukrainian Catholic Church - host building of the Ukraine House

While on a trip to Ukraine House, Vancouverites and Olympic Game visitors are invited to come tour one of Vancouver’s hidden gems – a beautiful example of a modern Byzantine (Eastern Catholic) Church. Designed by Julian Jastremsky, a New York based architect, the church was dedicated on October 31, 1982.

The Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary (St. Mary’s) Ukrainian Catholic Church, built with three large gold-covered domes is tucked among the residential neighbourhood of Ash and 14th Ave., Vancouver. It is a treasure trove of beautiful large icons in stained-glass and hand-set mosaics. The main and largest icon, which rises behind the altar, is a breathtaking three-storey mosaic of the Holy Mother of God that required the New York iconographer, the late Boris Makarenko, 250,000 coloured tiles to complete.

The Church, normally only open during daily services and on special Holy Days, invites visitors to view the icons or take a quiet moment for worship from 8:30 am to 9:00 pm during the Olympics, February 14 to February 27. During this time there will be several services offered for the faithful and visitors to take part in. On Sundays there are two Divine Liturgies, one at 8:30 am in Ukrainian / English and one at 10:30 am sung in Ukrainian by our renowned acapella choir.

The services will be shared by Bishop Ken Nowakowski, Eparch of New Westminster, Bishop Emeritus Severian Yakymyshyn, OSBM, as well as Eparchial, Basilian and Orthodox clergy from the greater Vancouver area. Depending on interest there will also be scheduled tours on the iconography seen in the church.
