The Paralympic Movement in Ukraine was founded in1989. At that time sport and health clubs for the disabled started to be organized. Later these public organizations became the basement of creation of national federations of sport for the disabled people with different locomotive, visual, hearing and mental impairments. In 1992 all these four federations united into the National Committee of Sport for the Disabled of Ukraine.

Disabled people community started very active actions on the recognition of social significance of physical culture and sport movement and the necessity of its proper state support. The rise of mass sport of the disabled took place when in Ukraine launched its activity unique and at the moment the only state system of administration of physical culture and sport for the disabled in the world. Under the decision of the Ukraine government there was created INVASPORT Ukrainian center of physical culture and sports for the disabled and 27 regional centers INVASPORT in 1993.

Today the Ukrainian National Committee of Sports for the Disabled represents Ukraine in the International Paralympic movement and maintains the functions of the National Paralympic Committee and also supports the development of the Deaflympic movement. According to International Paralympic Committee and International Federations of Sport for the Disabled, the pace of development of the Paralympic movement in Ukraine is the highest in Europe as per the last quadrennial.

The combination of work of the National Committee of Sports for the Disabled of Ukraine and INVASPORT state system has become a strong factor for the development of physical culture and sport for the disabled in our country. There are 27 INVASPORT regional centers and 109 branches in the Crimea autonomous republic, regional and city centers, 174 physical culture and sport clubs for the disabled, 27 youth sport schools for the disabled. More than 50 thousand of the disabled people and 22 thousand of school-age children attend sport-rehabilitation groups and sport classes on 27 kinds of sport. There are held more than 250 championships, cups and tournaments on 19 kinds of sports for people with visual, hearing, locomotive and intellectual disabilities in Ukraine.

Leading Ukrainian athletes have achieved great results at the highest international competitions, with dignity representing our country there. Among them 144 leading athletes received the title of Honored Master of Sport of Ukraine, 391 athletes received the title of Honored International Class Master of Sport of Ukraine, 719 athletes received the title of Master of Sport.

Due to system organization and practical work of the Ukrainian National Committee of Sports for the Disabled, INVASPORT Ukrainian center of physical culture and sport for the disabled and sport federations, Ukrainian disabled athletes managed not only to achieve great results but each performance of our athletes every time amazes the world with incredible victories.

From the first debut of the National team of Ukraine on the X Summer Paralympic Games in Atlanta, where our athletes won 1 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals in athletics and swimming and till the XIII Summer Paralympic Games in Beijing, where the achievement of the Team was not only 74 medals: 24 gold, 18 silver and 32 bronze ones, but Ukraine team also won fourth place in the world among 147 participating countries and nearly 4000 athletes! With only three Paralympics seasons experience.

Similar dynamics occur in all sports without an exception - Ukrainian athletes with disabilities overcome new frontiers gaining victories in many sports, proudly representing the name of our country on high Paralympic and Deaflympic podiums. And this is despite the rapid development of disabled sports in most countries!
