National Paralympic Winter Sports Team of Ukraine (List of athletes)

The idea of winter sports practicing in Ukraine appeared in 1993 while disabled sport system establishment. For the first time representatives of the Ukrainian National Committee of Sports for the Disabled became acquainted with winter sports, their specificity, the International Paralympics community, which already had experience in this field, in 1994 at the Winter Paralympics in Lillehammer.

Emblem of the 2010 Winter Paralympic Games in Vancouver was designed by Karacters Design Group of Vancouver to be the heart of Vancouver Paralympics. The emblem reflects a dynamic human profile which is created using images of the valley, mountains and sun of the West Coast, reproducing inner strength of the mountains, and the personal changes that occur with athletes when reaching new heights sports skills.

The first attempt to compete in winter sports was made in 1948 in Badhasteyn, Austria. It was the first championship held in Austria with ski races (so-called three track skiing), which was attended by 17 athletes with locomotor impairments.

The Paralympic Movement in Ukraine was founded in1989. At that time sport and health clubs for the disabled started to be organized. Later these public organizations became the basement of creation of national federations of sport for the disabled people with different locomotive, visual, hearing and mental impairments. In 1992 all these four federations united into the National Committee of Sport for the Disabled of Ukraine.

Паралімпійський рух в Україні
Формування спортивного руху інвалідів в Україні бере свій початок з 1989 року. Саме в цей час почали створюватись фізкультурно-спортивні та оздоровчі клуби інвалідів. У подальшому ці громадські об’єднання стали основою для створення національних федерацій спорту інвалідів з різними видами уражень: опорно-рухового апарату, вадами зору, слуху та інтелекту. У 1992 році ці чотири федерації об’єдналися у Національний комітет спорту інвалідів України.
